WHAT WE'RE ASKING FOR

The State and Federal Governments have each committed $5 billion to build an Airport Rail Link that will travel through Melbourne’s West.

The Victorian Government has also committed to delivering a $50 billion Suburban Rail Loop, linking Melbourne's suburbs from East to North, to West. The project includes a number of new stations earmarked for Melbourne's South and East.

Moonee Valley City Council strongly supports the Airport Rail Link. We have spoken out in favour of an Airport Rail Link in Council’s Integrated Transport Plan and Advocacy Strategy, as well as in the media.

But with the route set to travel through Airport West, we think it's a perfect opportunity to address a longstanding rail transport black hole.

That’s why we’re advocating for a train station at Airport West as part of the Airport Rail Link and Suburban Rail Loop.

WHY IT'S NEEDED

Did you know:

  • 7,564 people live in Airport West, with a further 14,514 people residing in neighbouring Keilor East
  • Close to 12,000 people work in Essendon Fields and Airport West, with that number projected to grow to over 27,000 in the coming years
  • 8.4% of Melbourne Airport staff reside in Moonee Valley
  • Just 9% of Airport West residents currently travel by train to work.

A new station at Airport West would connect our area to the rail transport network, ease congestion, help local business to thrive and make it easier for residents to get around.

Are you ready to get on board at Airport West?

  • Where will it go?

It's been so exciting to hear from so many new supporters of our campaign for a station at Airport West over the past week, as we've distributed flyers to close to 5,000 households across Airport West and Keilor East.

One of the most popular questions we've heard from you has been: where do you propose the station should be located?

The location of a station at Airport West would come down to a range of factors, including the exact route the line takes from the super-hub in Sunshine to the Airport. This will form part of the Business Case currently...

One of the most popular questions we've heard from you has been: where do you propose the station should be located?

The location of a station at Airport West would come down to a range of factors, including the exact route the line takes from the super-hub in Sunshine to the Airport. This will form part of the Business Case currently being developed by Rail Projects Victoria.

However, we do know that the route is likely to connect up through the existing rail corridor that runs along the back of Keilor East and Airport West, which currently services five regional passenger trains per day on the Albury-Wodonga route.

We’re proposing that a good location for a station would be around Roberts Road, Airport West/Terror Street, Keilor Park, immediately north-west of the Western Ring Road and Calder Freeway interchange.

This site has an existing public acquisition overlay for use for rail infrastructure. It is well connected to the road network, two existing bus routes, and the Western Ring Road and Steele Creek pedestrian/cycling trails. It is close to the residential area and could be easily connected up to the Airport West Westfield Shopping Centre and Essendon Fields by bus.

We know that a lack of access to train transport is a big issue for residents not just in Airport West, but also in surrounding suburbs like Keilor East. We're proposing a location that we hope would service the residents of both suburbs.

Council commissioned a feasibility study on the benefits of this site and how it could work as part of the Airport Rail Link and Suburban Rail Loop. You can read that report under the 'Document Library' tab on the right-hand side of this page.

We'd love to hear your feedback on the proposed location! Please continue to leave your thoughts in the 'Comments' tab, above.

Rail Projects Victoria will be holding two pop-up consultations in Moonee Valley over the coming few weeks to seek the community's feedback on the Melbourne Airport Rail Link project. This will help to inform the planning and design of the project and support the business case.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the next stages of the project and to let Rail Projects Victoria know directly why you support a station at Airport West.

Head along to one of the following sessions:

Today, we took our advocacy for a station at Airport West to the Minister. We are very grateful to local Member for Niddrie, Minister Ben Carroll MP, who was able to set up a meeting between the Mayor, Cr Narelle Sharpe, and Minister for Transport Infrastructure, the Hon. Jacinta Allan MP so that we could put the case on behalf of our community for a station at Airport West. The Mayor presented the Minister with a folio of information about our proposal, including a copy of the comments you have posted on this page showing your support for a station.

  • Federal Government supports Sunshine route

In a further update today, the Federal Government has confirmed that they would support the Albion East (Sunshine) route which is also the preferred choice of the current Victorian State Government.

This route would lead through Keilor Park and Airport West, making a station at Airport West a convenient choice.

We will now continue our advocacy to both levels of Government to make a station at Airport West a reality!
