It's time for a train station at Airport West

Visit our new campaign website at stillwaiting.com.au

Still waiting for a train at Airport West? Us too – so we’re doing something about it.

We’re kicking off the next stage of our campaign for a train station servicing Airport West and Keilor East – and we’re asking you to get on board.

From the end of October 2019, you will see buses travelling along Airport West/Keilor East/Tullamarine routes sporting our campaign advertisement.

If you catch a movie at Village Cinemas Airport West any time in November or December, you will also see our cinema advertisement, ‘Still Waiting’. It’s the story of a father from Keilor East and his son. They’ve been waiting for a train for a REALLY long time.

And throughout Moonee Valley, we’ll have outdoor advertisements at sixteen different locations during November.

While you can still visit us here at YourSay for updates, we've also created a new website dedicated to the Station for Airport West campaign. You can find that at stillwaiting.com.au. Over there, we've got:

  • Facts and stats that you can share about why we need a station servicing Airport West and Keilor East
  • An online form so you can send a message to the Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, the Hon. Jacinta Allan MP
  • A place to order campaign materials – fancy a yard sign for your house? Perhaps a poster and petition for your business? Get them here!

It’s time to end the wait. Your ticket to a station at Airport West is just a click away, so get on board now at stillwaiting.com.au.

  • Federal Government supports Sunshine route

In a further update today, the Federal Government has confirmed that they would support the Albion East (Sunshine) route which is also the preferred choice of the current Victorian State Government.

This route would lead through Keilor Park and Airport West, making a station at Airport West a convenient choice.

We will now continue our advocacy to both levels of Government to make a station at Airport West a reality!

“Born and raised in Airport West, I will always advocate for better public transport, including a train station as part of both Airport Rail and Suburban Rail Loop projects,” he said."

Great news! We're calling on all candidates in the upcoming State election to get on board with our campaign.

It's been just two weeks since we launched this platform and already, we've seen over 100 people visit to let us know how they feel about a station at Airport West. 98% of you think a station at Airport West is a GREAT idea! This kind of support will really help us lobby political decision-makers, so please - encourage your friends and neighbours to vote in our Quick Poll and join the campaign.

A few of you have asked why we're not advocating for a station at Keilor East rather than, or in addition to Airport West - it's a great question. Earlier this year, Moonee Valley Councillors resolved that whichever route was chosen for the Airport Rail Link, Council would advocate for a complimentary station to form part of the link. The resolution from Councillors read:

    That Council:

    1. Write to the Federal and State Transport Ministers, with copies to local MPs and
    neighbouring councils:
    a) Supporting a rail link to Melbourne Airport ;
    b) Requesting that, within Moonee Valley, the preparation of the business
    case include:
    i) Flemington Link – Grade separation at Ascot Vale Road
ii) Flemington link / Direct Tunnel route – Two stations at Milleara Rd
    and Airport West
iii) Albion East route – One station at Airport West
    c) Not supporting the Craigieburn line route due to capacity constraints.
    d) Requesting Moonee Valley City Council be consulted on the proposed
    routes and station locations.

    2. Incorporate the Melbourne Airport Rail Link project into Council’s Advocacy
    Strategy.

    3. Receive a further report back following the release of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link business case.

With the State Government having selected the Albion East (Sunshine) route as their preferred option, Council is choosing to focus its advocacy on a station for Airport West. Why? The route that the Albion East route will follow, will take it through Keilor Park and Airport West - but not through Keilor East. There is also existing rail track infrastructure that flows through Airport West which will likely feature in the plans for the Airport Rail Link.

Put simply - if the Airport Rail Link follows the Albion East (Sunshine) route, a station at Airport West is the most practical, and possible solution to the lack of rail access in Moonee Valley's north-west.
