Airport Rail Link

A train station for Airport West as part of the Airport Rail Link

The State and Federal Governments have each committed $5 billion to build an Airport Rail Link that will travel through Melbourne’s West.

Moonee Valley City Council strongly supports the Airport Rail Link. We have spoken out in favour of an Airport Rail Link in Council’s Integrated Transport Plan and Advocacy Strategy, as well as in the media.

Albion East (Sunshine) has been nominated as the preferred route for the Airport Rail Link as well as the State Government's proposed Suburban Rail Loop. Both routes will travel through Airport West.

That’s why we’re advocating for a train station at Airport West as part of the Airport Rail Link.

Airport West and neighbouring Essendon Fields has been identified as a key aviation, technology and employment precinct by the Victorian Government. But in spite of its regional significance, the Airport West/Essendon Fields precinct is currently a rail transport black hole.

A station at Airport West would boost employment, services and economic opportunity in the region. Coupled with the Airport Rail Link and the proposed Suburban Rail Loop, it would enable ready linkages between Airport West and Melbourne Airport, Sunshine and the west, Broadmeadows and the north, and the CBD.

A station at Airport West would benefit:

  • Local residents currently underserviced by public transport

  • Staff working at Westfield Airport West, Essendon Fields and in surrounding industrial precincts

  • The more than 20% of Melbourne Airport staff who reside in Moonee Valley and neighbouring Brimbank[1]

  • Travellers between Melbourne and Essendon Airports.

We're ready to get on board at Airport West.

    Ben jacinta mayor

Today, we took our advocacy for a station at Airport West to the Minister. We are very grateful to local Member for Niddrie, Minister Ben Carroll MP, who was able to set up a meeting between the Mayor, Cr Narelle Sharpe, and Minister for Transport Infrastructure, the Hon. Jacinta Allan MP so that we could put the case on behalf of our community for a station at Airport West. The Mayor presented the Minister with a folio of information about our proposal, including a copy of the comments you have posted on this page showing your support for a station.

The Minister showed a great deal of awareness of our campaign and indicated that she has visited the area where we are proposing to build a station. She indicated that the Government will consider the proposal for a station at Airport West as they progress the business case for both the Melbourne Airport Rail Link and the Suburban Rail Loop. Great news!

  • Federal Government supports Sunshine route

In a further update today, the Federal Government has confirmed that they would support the Albion East (Sunshine) route which is also the preferred choice of the current Victorian State Government.

This route would lead through Keilor Park and Airport West, making a station at Airport West a convenient choice.

We will now continue our advocacy to both levels of Government to make a station at Airport West a reality!

It's been just two weeks since we launched this platform and already, we've seen over 100 people visit to let us know how they feel about a station at Airport West. 98% of you think a station at Airport West is a GREAT idea! This kind of support will really help us lobby political decision-makers, so please - encourage your friends and neighbours to vote in our Quick Poll and join the campaign.

This kind of support will really help us lobby political decision-makers, so please - encourage your friends and neighbours to vote in our Quick Poll and join the campaign.

A few of you have asked why we're not advocating for a station at Keilor East rather than, or in addition to Airport West - it's a great question. Earlier this year, Moonee Valley Councillors resolved that whichever route was chosen for the Airport Rail Link, Council would advocate for a complimentary station to form part of the link. The resolution from Councillors read:

    That Council:

    1. Write to the Federal and State Transport Ministers, with copies to local MPs and
    neighbouring councils:
    a) Supporting a rail link to Melbourne Airport ;
    b) Requesting that, within Moonee Valley, the preparation of the business
    case include:
    i) Flemington Link – Grade separation at Ascot Vale Road
ii) Flemington link / Direct Tunnel route – Two stations at Milleara Rd
    and Airport West
iii) Albion East route – One station at Airport West
    c) Not supporting the Craigieburn line route due to capacity constraints.
    d) Requesting Moonee Valley City Council be consulted on the proposed
    routes and station locations.

    2. Incorporate the Melbourne Airport Rail Link project into Council’s Advocacy
    Strategy.

    3. Receive a further report back following the release of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link business case.

With the State Government having selected the Albion East (Sunshine) route as their preferred option, Council is choosing to focus its advocacy on a station for Airport West. Why? The route that the Albion East route will follow, will take it through Keilor Park and Airport West - but not through Keilor East. There is also existing rail track infrastructure that flows through Airport West which will likely feature in the plans for the Airport Rail Link.

Put simply - if the Airport Rail Link follows the Albion East (Sunshine) route, a station at Airport West is the most practical, and possible solution to the lack of rail access in Moonee Valley's north-west.
