Airport Rail Link

A train station for Airport West as part of the Airport Rail Link

The State and Federal Governments have each committed $5 billion to build an Airport Rail Link that will travel through Melbourne’s West.

Moonee Valley City Council strongly supports the Airport Rail Link. We have spoken out in favour of an Airport Rail Link in Council’s Integrated Transport Plan and Advocacy Strategy, as well as in the media.

The Victorian Government has also committed to delivering a $50 billion Suburban Rail Loop, linking Melbourne's suburbs from East to North, to West.

The rail corridor will travel through Melbourne's West with a super hub at Sunshine, before progressing through the North-West to the Airport. Both routes will travel through Airport West.

That’s why we’re advocating for a train station at Airport West as part of the Airport Rail Link and Suburban Rail Loop.

Airport West and neighbouring Essendon Fields has been identified as a key aviation, technology and employment precinct by the Victorian Government. But in spite of its regional significance, the Airport West/Essendon Fields precinct is currently a rail transport black hole.

A station at Airport West would boost employment, services and economic opportunity in the region. Coupled with the Airport Rail Link and the proposed Suburban Rail Loop, it would enable ready linkages between Airport West and Melbourne Airport, Sunshine and the west, Broadmeadows and the north, and the CBD.

A station at Airport West would benefit:

  • Local residents currently underserviced by public transport

  • Staff working at Westfield Airport West, Essendon Fields and in surrounding industrial precincts

  • The more than 17% of Melbourne Airport staff who reside in Moonee Valley and neighbouring Brimbank[1]

  • Visitors to Essendon Airport (with suitable bus connections)

  • Travellers to and from Melbourne Airport seeking parking alternatives.

We're ready to get on board at Airport West.
