About

A Reconciliation Plan is a commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Council's Reconciliation Plan is called Bagarru Bagarru Djerring, meaning “Shoulder to Shoulder Together” in Woi-wurrung language.

The Bagarru Bagarru Djerring Plan aligns with MV2040 and the Council Plan and Health Plan. It also aligns with the 7 pillars within the Victoria Aboriginal and Local Government Strategy.

Community engagement process

In 2019, Council established the Reconciliation Working Group to guide the development of the Bagarru Bagarru Djerring Reconciliation Plan.

The Reconciliation Working Group is made up of well-respected Aboriginal Elders, service providers and community advocates.

As part of Council’s Summer in the Valley February 2022 events calendar, Council facilitated stage one of community consultation for the draft Reconciliation Plan through the delivery of three Yarning Circles. The sessions were facilitated by Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders and members of the Reconciliation Working Group. Yarning Circles are an important traditional cultural method of communication for First Peoples, and allows those in the circle to learn from a collective group, build respectful relationships and to preserve and pass on cultural knowledge. This unique approach was made available to our community and positive feedback and support was received.

Council continues to work actively in partnership with the Reconciliation Working Group and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders as well as internal departments.

Next steps

Council is currently seeking further feedback on the draft Bagarru Bagarru Djerring Reconciliation Plan from Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, organisations and the community.

Public feedback on the draft Plan opens 1 December 2022.

This feedback will inform the final version of the Plan, which will be adopted early 2023.

As part of our engagement on the Plan, we also have a draft Reconciliation Policy we are seeking your feedback on.
