Background
Our purpose
Moonee Valley Pride (MVP) is the voice of Moonee Valley's LGBTIQA+ community, providing feedback to Council to make sure our City is fair, welcoming and safe for all.
Our context
The Moonee Valley Pride (MVP) reference group was formed in 2015 to support LGBTIQA+ strategy and policy development for the municipality, ensuring Council’s decisions are evidence based and informed by strong community input.
The group most notably have supported Council’s campaign to achieve marriage equality and prepare the LGBTIQA+ Strategy, the MV2040 Strategy, the Fair Action Plan, and varying iterations of the Council Plan.
The group has been dormant since February 2024.
Re-establishing the group
Moonee Valley City Council is re-establishing the MVP reference group to support the development of a new plan to support the LGBTIQA+ community.
Council has determined that the most effective way to prioritise the needs of the LGBTIQA+ community is to integrate the LGBTQIA+ Inclusion plan into the MV2040 Vision and the Council Plan and Health Plan 2025-29.
The development of an operational implementation plan will be supported by the MVP reference group. The primary function of re-establishing the MVP reference group is to provide lived experience and strategic advice to inform the development and implementation of this plan. The MVP reference group will meet quarterly for 12 months (4 meetings), with an option to extend if needed. An Introduction to Local Government training will be provided to all reference group members with the aim to ensure members have a proficient understanding of the role of local government and their ability to influence it. This training will be held online at a time that suits members.
The MVP reference group will:
- develop Moonee Valley City Council’s LGBTQIA+ operational implementation plan
- provide advice to Council representatives on LGBTIQA+ related matters
MV Pride Membership
Council welcomes any and all people who identify as LGBTIQA+ who live, work, study, and/or recreate in Moonee Valley to apply. Applications will also be considered for those who identify as allies of LGBTIQA+ (e.g. cisgendered [1], endosex [2], and heterosexual parents of LGBTIQA+ children).
We aim to have a balanced representation of individuals in the group. We’re looking to create a committee that reflects the diverse experience of LGBTIQA+ people in our City including:
- people from diverse backgrounds
- people with a disability
- people of a variety of ages (there is no minimum age for members)
- people from different locations across the municipality and beyond
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
[1] a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex
[2] people whose sex characteristics meet medical and social norms for typically 'male' or 'female' bodies
Expressions of interest
Applications are currently open from June 16, 2025 – July 11, 2025, via the Expression of Interest (EOI) form linked to this page. Following a review of applications, a formal invitation will be extended pending acceptance of the group’s terms of reference.
If successful, members will commit to attend 5 meetings.
