FAQs
What is open space?
How does Council currently fund open space?
Council currently collects funds through Public Open Space Contribution. When proposing to subdivide land into two or more lots, the landowner is required to make a contribution of 5% of the site value. This is used to create open spaces such as public parks, playgrounds and reserves.
Why do we need an open space plan?
To ensure that our community continues to enjoy Moonee Valley’s open spaces today and into the future, we need to plan to protect, enhance and increase our open spaces.
Moonee Valley is also growing in population and we need to make sure our open space provides the right amount and quality of open space for our entire community.
Since Moonee Valley’s Open Space Strategy was created in 2009, a lot has changed in the local area, including:
- the creation of Council’s long term vision for Moonee Valley, MV2040
- a significant increase in Moonee Valley’s population
- an increase in apartment living.
This new strategy will assist Council to deliver a comprehensive, connected and well-managed system of open spaces to meet the needs of the community today and into the future
