Project update September 2025:

We’re excited to announce Discover Avondale Heights – a one-day community event at Avondale Heights Reserve on Sunday 9 November, 10am–2pm.

Developed based on feedback from the local community, Discover Avondale Heights will celebrate the best of Avondale Heights. The event will:

  • Showcase local community facilities and the groups who use them
  • Invite the community to share ideas for how these spaces could be used in the future
  • Feature pop-up food stalls, live entertainment, and activities for all ages

This community event represents an early step in a broader placemaking process for Avondale Heights, helping to build a vibrant and connected community for the future.

Background

In the 1920s, when Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney designed the layout for the neighbourhood now known as Avondale Heights, they emphasised the importance of access to shared spaces and areas for children to play.

A century later, we are guided by similar principles as we work to create better places and spaces in Avondale Heights.

In 2023, we consulted with those who live, work and play in Avondale Heights to understand how they use community spaces. We heard about what facilities they used, what they loved about them and what they thought could be done better or needs to be provided.

We heard from over 300 people during that consultation period and wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you who got involved. That information gathered will now be used to plan for future use of community facilities in Avondale Heights.

Let's activate community facilities in Avondale Heights

As part of the Reimagining Avondale Heights project, we’re looking at ways the network of facilities in Avondale Heights and Milleara can be adapted and improved to meet current and future needs of its users.

We know our facilities provide the community with a place to connect, attend and run programs, events and many activities.

We are now exploring opportunities for Council and the community to work together to explore new ways to use and activate community facilities in Avondale Heights.

Project update - June 2025: Community champions

During May 2025, Council invited community members to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) to be Community Champions, to share new ideas about how we can use our community facilities and help shape the series of community-based programs in Avondale Heights. The EOI process is now closed. Thank you to those who applied! Council contacted submitters, and the Community Champions workshop took place on 3 June 2025. A further update will be provided on the series of community-based programs as they start to take shape.
