Background and context
Council wants to know what the community thinks of the selected names for the proposed renaming of the northern sections of road in The Avenue and Newman Street, between Keilor Road and Hotham Road, Niddrie.
This is the second stage of a community consultation process on the proposed renaming of the northern sections of road in The Avenue and Newman Street, in Niddrie. On 22 August 2023, Council endorsed this next stage of the process to commence a formal consultation on the selected street names.
A number of subdivisions have occurred in this area, resulting in the establishment of new dwellings that require a street address. The current street numbering for these sections between Keilor Road and Hotham Road is at capacity. The only option remaining is to rename each section.
The proposed renaming of these road sections will enable the creation of a new band of street numbers. It will also ensure that all properties are readily identifiable for access to essential services and mail services, and it will mean the properties will be easier to locate by emergency services responders.
The initial community consultation calling for naming suggestions ran from the 1st to the 25th of June 2023. Through this consultation, Council received 19 naming suggestions for the affected sections of The Avenue and 13 for Newman Street. A review of the naming suggestions and feedback received identified a preference for a name relating to native animals or plants, or an indigenous name. As a result of this, two potential names incorporating Woi-wurrung language are proposed. These names are:
Turrun Street (translation: she-oak) - for section of The Avenue; and
Wayut Street (translation: stringybark) - for Newman Street section.
Both are native plants, and both have been pre-approved by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
