GNV approved the name and Wagut Street will be published in the Victoria Government Gazette in early June 2025.
The Avenue
After considering community submissions, Council endorsed the proposal and lodged an application with Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) for their approval of the name, Turrun Street (Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung language, translation: she-oak). Affected properties have a right of appeal to Council’s decision which closes on 28 March 2025 Following the review of appeals received GNV will determine the outcome of the application.
Background and context
Council sought community feedback about the selected names for the proposed renaming of the northern sections of road in The Avenue and Newman Street, between Keilor Road and Hotham Road, Niddrie.
This was the second stage of a community consultation process on the proposed renaming of the northern sections of road in The Avenue and Newman Street, in Niddrie. On 22 August 2023, Council endorsed this stage of the process to commence a formal consultation on the selected street names.
A number of subdivisions have occurred in this area, resulting in the establishment of new dwellings that require a street address. The current street numbering for these sections between Keilor Road and Hotham Road is at capacity. The only option remaining is to rename each section.
The proposed renaming of these road sections will enable the creation of a new band of street numbers. It will also ensure that all properties are readily identifiable for access to essential services and mail services, and it will mean the properties will be easier to locate by emergency services responders.
The initial community consultation calling for naming suggestions ran from the 1st to the 25th of June 2023. Through this consultation, Council received 19 naming suggestions for the affected sections of The Avenue and 13 for Newman Street. A review of the naming suggestions and feedback received identified a preference for a name relating to native animals or plants, or an indigenous name. As a result of this, two potential names incorporating Woi-wurrung language were proposed. These names are:
Turrun Street (translation: she-oak) - for section of The Avenue; and
Wayut Street (translation: stringybark) - for Newman Street section.
Both are native plants, and both have been pre-approved by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
Process
Community members were invited to vote on the proposed street names by 5pm Friday 20 October 2023. All votes were counted, and the official names were based on the majority preference to change the existing names, and Moonee Valley City Council approval.
Community members could object to the naming proposal, by commenting in the survey linked to this page, writing to Council, or emailing placenaming@mvcc.vic.gov.au. Objectors were required to provide their name, address and contact details and an explanation of why they do not support the proposed name(s).
