Thank you to all who completed the survey. This consultation is now closed. Based on the outcome of the survey results, Council will continue to plant Lophostemon Confertus (Queensland Brush Box) as the designated species for Filson Street, Ascot Vale.
Background
Following the receipt of a petition on 28 October 2021 to replace five newly planted trees with an alternative species (Algerian Oak or Pin Oak), Council resolved at the Council Meeting on 12 April 2022 to:
- Retain the five newly planted trees in Filson Street, Ascot Vale for the remainder of their Safe Useful Life Expectancy.
- Note that Lophostemon Confertus (Brush Box) was the nominated species as part of the infill planting program for Filson Street (at the time, and the dominant tree species, with 27 trees on nature strips in good and healthy condition).
- Note the concerns from petitioners requesting a change to the remaining infill tree species and future plantings for Filson Street, Ascot Vale,
- Request for consultation to occur with Filson Street residents regarding a proposed change in tree species and streetscape character, ensuring the current nominated species, and two other highly suitable and climate resilient choices, are provided to residents via the process outlined within Council’s Tree Management Plan.
Community consultation
Council invited community to help nominate a tree species for Filson Street, and proposed three suitable, climate resilient, high performing urban street trees for consideration. Community was advised that an alternative choice from the nominated species would alter the landscape character of the street and delay a consistent streetscape for up to 50 years, as trees will only be replaced at the end of their safe useful life.
Community could have their say via an online survey, or by phoning, emailing or writing to Council.
